A Little Bit of Content: Tips for small business owners

Let's chat about the time when I almost lost out on a bunch of income because people didn't know what I did for my business (spoiler - I wasn't good at talking about it!)

"I didn't know you could help with this"

I still remember those words and it was almost a decard ago.

A small business owner was looking to outsource social media - at the time, Instagram was still fairly new, but Facebook was a big deal.

They knew they wanted support and another business owner (who I hadn't worked with, but had attended events with) recommended me.

We set up a call to discuss their needs and see if I was the right fit.

My business was a few years old.

But by this point I had been a featured blogger on some major accounts, and frequently talked about social media. I had many accounts that I worked on at that time and quite a few clients. My business was clearly growing.

I had even met this other business owner before.

And yet on our first call, they said they didn't know I did that kind of work or that I could help with social media and content writing.

*record scratch.

So after 4 years, and a pretty extensive online presence, people in my business community still didn't know what I did and how they could work with me (and in turn, pay me).

Yikes.

I shouldn't have been surprised. A lot of my business was, and still is, thanks to referrals (which I greatly appreciate!) however I wanted to diversify my marketing. Plus, for people to refer me, they had to know what I did! I needed to be the person who came to mind when someone was looking for content/social media/writing support.

I was WAY too quiet about my work and my growing business. I didn't clearly communicate how I could help other business owners.

Sound familiar?

Getting visible, talking about your business and promoting your services and products (we all want to make sales!) can feel overwhelming but there is a way to shine a spotlight on your business that works for you.

And you don't have to do it alone.

I've teamed up with Lara Wellman and Vanessa Chiasson to create Illuminate Your Biz - a 6 week program to help the small business community with confidence.

With our early bird pricing you save $50 (this ends March 29!)

Count down to 2024-03-30T03:59:00.000Z

➡️ 💡Don't be like me and wait and hope for referrals only to find out that people don't know what it is you do. Let's grow our visibility together and confidently talk about our business and how we can help.

The content, marketing, business and life newsletter What if we did things that worked for us in our business instead of what everyone else is doing? It's a bit of a rhetorical question because that's the advice I usually give. Comparing to other businesses and trying to replicate their plan and actions, even if they don't help meet our own goals, is overwhelming and won't necessarily lead to success. You have to do what works for you. For your business and your life. If you can't attend a...

The content, marketing, business and life newsletter I'm going to share something I haven't talked about much. I have been running my freelance business for almost 15 years. I have spoken at many events, meetings, conferences, and workshops - on stage, live in a room, virtually in Zoom. I think I am quite good as a speaker (usually) - educating, informing, and while I love to write, sometimes I feel as though I'm better at communicating if I can just have a conversation. However, after the...
